Return of the Light: A Winter Solstice Luminary Workshop
As winter deepens and the days grow shorter, gather with us to create, reflect, and welcome back the light.
Inspired by the Winter Solstice—the turning point when darkness reaches its fullest and the light begins its gradual return—this hands-on ceramic workshop invites you to create a luminary from slabs of clay. Through cutouts, patterns, and intentional design, candlelight will glow through the clay, casting shifting shadows and light into the space around you.
Choose Your Luminary: The Tall Luminary
Create a single, elegant cylindrical luminary with pierced or cut designs. Explore geometric, botanical, organic, or abstract patterns—or keep it beautifully simple.
Light in Three Forms
Create a trio of smaller luminaries in varying heights, designed to glow together as a set. Give them a shared pattern for a cohesive look, or let each one have its own personality.
Working with rolled slabs of wet clay, participants will learn the fundamentals of hand-building while designing their own unique luminary. Explore cutouts, patterns, texture, and form using templates, stencils, texture mats, and other tools—or follow your own creative instincts and free-form your design.
You’ll learn how to shape, join, strengthen, and refine your piece as you bring your luminary to life. Once constructed, participants will add color and surface decoration using studio underglazes.
Throughout the workshop, we’ll reflect on the simple symbolism of the luminary: That even as the light seems to fade into darkness, we can always count on its return in the days to come.
Create something by hand, slow down for an afternoon, and make some space for a little light in the winter season.
